A Grassland Biome is an area populated mainly by grasses and several other types of plants. However, because of the minimal amout of rain it receives durring most of the year, the biome is not moist enough to support trees. Trees are really only able to grow along rivers and watterways, wher e the soild is fertile. The harsh, dry conditions of the Grassland often cause fires and droughts, forcing the animal inhabbitants of the biome to adapt to the constantly severe envirement. There are many different types of Grassland biomes located all over the world. The African savanna, which is located in close proximity to the equator, is one of many different Grassland Biomes.

The African Savanna has a wet/ dry climate. The savanna's dry season happens in winter. Durring this period of time, most of the plants die from lack of water, the rivers and streams dry out, and most of the animals migrate to other areas in search of food. However, in Spring, when the wet season begins, the Grassland is overcome with life. The plants grow, the rivers fill up, and the animals return to graze. The Dry season is ussually the cooler of the two seasons, but, there is never a drastice temperature change. Through out the entire year, the savanna stays at about the same temperature.

An African Savana recives as much as much 120 centimeters of rain each year. There are 2 diffrent seasons in the Savana, a dry one, durring the winter, and a wet one, durring the summer. In the dry season it only rains a total of about 4 inches, and sometimes can go for months with out raining. However, in the summer the wet season begins, and the Savanna recieves 15 to 25 inches of rain each month. One storm can last days at time with out end. The reason why this happens, is becuase during the day it is extremely humid. When humid air rises it mixes with the cooler air to create large rain storm known as a monsoon.

One animal that inhabits the Grassland biome is the lion. The lion is a powerfull, intimidating predator, with the ability to run up to forty miles an hour when chasing its prey. Lions are stong, massive cats that live in groups of four to forty animals, known as prides. Because of the lions ability to blend in with the grasslands long grasses, and its immense strenght, the lion is able to hunt and feast on larger, more dificult prey.

The temperature in the African savanna remains about the same through out the entire year, however, in the dry season it tends to be a little cooler. Over all the temperature in the savanna range from 68 degrees fahrenheit to 86 degress fahrenheit. In the winter it is ussually closer to 68-78, while the summer temperature is usually 78-86. The temperature in this grassland barely ever changes, and if it does, the increase or decrease is not drastic.

Some forms of plants that reside in the African savanna are:
Candelabra Tree- This tree can grow from 30 to 40 feet high. The “cactus” like flowers that grow on the top of the braches bloom into little yellow flowers duding mid winter. Although this tree appears beautiful and harmless, it contains a poisonous white sap that is dangerous to both humans and animals. Elephant Grass- This form of grass I very tall and can grow up to ten feet high. The dense grass clumps grow along the banks of rivers and lakes where the soil remains fertile.
Jarrah- This is a type of Eucalyptus tree that grows roughly 40 to 50 meters high and has a trunk diameter of 3 meters. The trunk is long, straight, and covered in a brown bark.

Some animals that live in the African Savanna are:
African Elephant- This animal is the largest land mammal. It can weigh up to 10,000 pounds, and grow as tall as 12 feet tall. They use their long flexible trunks, to pick up water and food. They have two long teeth known as tusks, and are covered in thick, rough, gray skin.
Nile crocodile- This animal is the most intelligent reptile on earth. Its long snout and sharp teeth allow it to devour large prey. It also has a long body and dark skin that helps it blend in with the murky water that it
African wild dog- Their real name stands for “painted wolf” because their short fur multi colored. They have slender, long bodies, strong legs, and four fingered paws. The male and female species are both about the same and size, and they are the largest dogs in Africa.
